Ok, to explain some points of my posts above and in general:
When I write "telnet into the box", that means use putty with telnet OR (if you already used the passwd command) use putty/ssh. If you are not running a windows machine, use "ssh" or "telnet" itself. Because I can't know what you already did, I cannot give 100% accurate descriptions.
About the auto-installer:
The auto installer works with the following rules:
1. During bootup, check if the extendRoot stuff was first enabled. That is the tool, which is responsible for the extend_fs folder on the usb stick and that additional software is installable.
2. Check if the auto_package file is available
If one of those two rules applies, the box_installer starts. It will end, if only rule one applies without installing the packages in the install folder.
With the pirateBox installation, the SSID is setup and the DHCP server is configured within opt/piratebox and not in the system itself anymore.
I started to write a "workflow alike" document for first aid and further investigation... it will take some time to publish.. anyway
