As long as the ui accepts the Firmware file, you have good chances to get it running.
It is recommended to have at least 4GB, I think 2GB would work too.
The out of space errors have other reasons. These appear if something went wrong during the installation. It is crucial that you reflash the device with the OpenWrt firmware. You may follow this howto to do this: [piratebox.cc] or [piratebox.cc]
About the USB drive:
You have to be sure, that it has enough power to power up. My experience is, that the MR3040 has too less even for some usb sticks- So you need to put the Y-USB-Cable to a separate battery. The MR3040 won't deliver more then 500mA - even that, I'm wouldn't swear on.
