Probably not worth worrying about in any major degree. Our project is nearing 700mb in size (a lot of that is images and other similar types of assets), it's also a Mac and (universal) iOS app combined into one project due to all of the shared code and resources.
As soon as you brought up the FAT32 volume that makes me as concerned as you about the permissions issues. I might have been able to pull this off with the Raspberry Pi based pirate box but with the OpenWrt stuff probably not so much :) I didn't want to spend that kinda money on something that we were still toying around with.
No worries though, I think we can get around this easily enough by just making someone's Mac an origin for the duration of the trip.
