There are a few important things about external hard drives and the MR3040.
1st: the MR3040 has a very limited power output to the USB port. On some days, even my USB stick with an LED does not work reliable. So for a external harddrive, it is 100% required to add an additional power source using an Y USB cable.
2nd: You need one big partition. The device needs to have a partition table, which is hard to tell using windows. Under linux you would see the difference (connected to the PirateBox) in /dev/sda (only) and /dev/sda1. PirateBox only checks if sda1 is available.
3rd: The filesystem needs to be fat32 / vfat
In addition, you may post the output of the troubleshooting commands: [piratebox.cc] , which help to identify the problem.
