After spedning several hours I was finally able to get back in and do the thing I originally attempted which was a sysupgrade of the original firmware. Basically just follow the Restoring Original Firmware guide from openwrt: [wiki.openwrt.org]
To transfer the file I rebooted and when it first flashed the light on WPS/RESET I held down WPS for a few seconds until it flashed quickly. Then I telnet to 192.168.1.1 (after manually configuring the ethernet on my mac to that address and giving my machine 192.168.1.2). Then I just did a
