Trying to Setup Piratebox, unable to telnet the box. Please Help!

Hello! I have recently purchased the TP MR3020 and have been following this guide:

And now I am unable to connect to my Surface Pro 3 via eithernet through a usb-ethernet adapter. Please help!

I did change my static IP to 192.168.1.1 and then to 192.168.1.2 and it still was unable to connect.
