ok, so I did find some time to dig out an USB stick with a LED and reinstalled a stock PirateBox on my MR3020. For me, the USB light is steady, only blinking when activity.

So, maybe the different behavior is just a silly kernel or hardware issue in the combination with your 1043. Based from the numbers we took before, there is no r/w traffic ongoing on the USB stick.
