I feel compelled to inform you all that I am a total novice. So, please, be forgiving.
I managed to make it all the way through the guide, through the installation of PirateBox. Upon reboot, however, there is no discoverable wifi network. I am not certain how to proceed from this point, everything else having checked out.
Perhaps it is naive, but I am really hoping this will be simple (it has taken quite a lot to get to this point with this project).
