Can't get into Failsafe with MR3020

I bought a MR3020 to use as a LibraryBox. I got OpenWRT and PirateBox setup without too much trouble, but when I ran the script to install LibraryBox it threw a bunch of errors. Now I can't SSH into the PirateBox anymore, so I'm trying to reflash the MR3020 and start over. I tried to follow this guide and this guide, but I can't figure it out.

Here's what I did:

[*] Turned off my laptop wifi
[*] Set my IP to 192.168.1.2
[*] Set my subnet to 255.255.255.0
[*] Started to ping 192.168.1.1
[*] Connected the MR3020 to my laptop
[*] Powered on the MR3020
[*] Waited for the WPS button to blink, then pressed it (it started to blink rapidly)
[*] Never saw the ping get a response

I got two error messages: "Request timed out." and "Reply for 10.1.212.238: Destination host unreachable." I tried to telnet and SSH into 192.168.1.1, but I can't get in. I don't know what else I should do to troubleshoot. There are a lot more options in the properties dialog I used to set the static IP (I'm on Windows 7); do I need to set a default gateway or DNS servers?
