Much thanks for the help. Good news. On the second attempt I was able to reinstall OpenWRT and judging by the fact that it now has a proper prompt, it was a better install. Now I can telnet and SSH to my device.
Unfortunately, I am still unable to ping on the device (bad address 'google.com').
My wireless network connection is firewalled. Could this be the reason for the non-connection?
