SSH terminating while installing

I am trying to install Piratebox on a TL-MR3020 so I can install Librarybox. I have been thru the steps (both from the Librarybox site and from Piratebox sites) multiple times and after many restarts including reflashing the OpenWRT I got to the point of running SSH (via PuTTY) to install Piratebox. I have tried Piratebox 0.3-2 and 0.6.3 with the same problems. When I have started the "opkg update && opkg install piratebox_0.6.3_all.ipk", for example, it takes off and runs successfully for a while and when it has gotten to the part where it says:
"Configuration file: /var/run/hostapd-phy0.conf
Using interface wlan0 with hwaddr f8:1a:67:87:1a:84 and ssid 'PirateBox - Share Freely' "
it hesitates for a few seconds and then I get a PuTTY Fatal Error message "Network Error: Software caused connection abort"
That seems to terminate the session and I assume the rest of the installation is stopped. After that I can't get into the 3020 at all without going back to doing a default start on the 3020 and beginning the process all over again. I have tried to reboot the device but it is not accessible either from wireless or an ethernet cable.
I assume something in the install process changes a parameter on the 3020 so it is no longer talking to PuTTY. I thought it might be taking too long and something timed out so I configured the keep-alive parameter on PuTTY but still no luck.
I seem to be very close but this is stumping me.

Any suggestions?
