Thanks for the help Matthias. You DA man!!! 5 days later and I'm up and running.

usb mount issue was solved:

mkdir /mnt/usb

then: cd /mnt/usb

then: mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb

after that i installed from USB


turns out i was running OpenWRT 12.09 instead of 12.09 Vol.2 which is where some issues were no doubt coming from.
