Just to be sure...when you say I should first "flash the openwrt firmware, you mean to do this:

cd /tmp
mtd -r write openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3040-v2-squashfs-factory.bin firmware

Right?
If so, before the above should I also do: mtd -r erase rootfs_data ? ...as before.

RE: PirateBox wifi network broadcasting or not: No, my laptops get no sign of the PB SSID broadcasting.

Evan thanks for advice. Haven't (yet) followed Evan's above suggestion re config adjustments, as his link refers to MR3020 and I'm not sure it would apply to my MR2040.
But, the only difference in my network config file I see via Evan's vi /etc/config/network is that the list under "config interface "lan" ' on my router is missing the line "option gateway 192.168.1.1" that Evan says should be there. Would you, Dalton, then concur I should edit this config file, as Evan describes? I'm not sure I'll know how to edit in PuTTY (yet).

By the way I have returned my LAN network adapter in IPv4 settings to "normal": Obtain an IP address automatically, though all through these installations I have kept DNS to my specific preferred addresses. I'm under the impression my normal should be "Obtain an IP address automatically". It's not clear to me of when, in this PB installation and use of PB, I will now need or will need a static IP set.

Aside Note: With router connected by ethernet and Putty accessing it, I can connect to my internet home wifi SSID and see "Internet Access" indicating(?) internet connected, but browsers don't resolve any internet addresses.
