In case of a situation, where the box isnot working as expected using a static ip you can describe it as a "key card", yes.
It is quite uncommon to brick the device, the only way to really brick it, is to flash the wrong file into to uboot... that isn't that easy :)
I was able to recover a lot of devices with serial access... without one MR3040 from England , a single brick in my long history ;)
