So the problem is that you can't configure the network on your PC to use a static IP, instead of DHCP?
I use Ubuntu and I simply create a new network connection in the network manager in the GUI, with a static IP. And then connect using telnet or ssh. If you use some other operating system the procedure is different. Try Google and search "Your Operating System setup static IP"
Also see my post on reinstall, you should be able to do what I described there, only with minor changes for the 3020 instead of my 3040.
