Actually after totally disconnecting from the other network I was on the error went away.
When connected via ethernet to the MR3040 and the local wireless as well piratebox.lan Is invalid. however when only connected to the Piratebox piratebox.lan responds as expected.
I assume that this is as designed, however I wanted to share my findings just in case it could help.
