Currently the piratebox doesn't support ramips devices, at the moment only the ar71xx devices are.
About the bootloader being a security risk, not really in my opinion. sure you can alter the bootloader of the device directly from the firmware.
But with that partition locked, you could still write to the firmware partition itself. So that is an much more interesting target anyway.
The viruses for routers currently seen in the wild, install into the r/w partition of the router or directly into ram memory.
