Hi,
first of all, only the images from
Language: PHP
http://stable.openwrt.piratebox.de/auto_1.0.6/
contain a special boot script, which does the automatic installation on those devices. So take the original image from openwrt.org won't work in any case out of the box with only plugging an USB Stick to it.

Then, as you can see on our supported hardware page, we have listed the MR3220 with NA, because we don't have any image... and the broad band of different hardware behind the modelname makes it difficult for uncertain users. You can get an impression how difficult it is, when you visit the OpenWRT MR3420 (which is a MR3220,too).

Then, we can't support BreakingBarrier and above, because the bootup changed. This change broke our way to enhance the firmware-disk-space with the USB stick.
Technically, everything is there, but the start-up process does not work anymore. So, even if you follow our OpenWRT manual installation HowTo, you end up with a not fully working box. I can't recommend using 0.6, because that may not work to install, because some files are already removed, because they are absolete.

The only hint, I can give for newer firmwares is, that you remove my symlink in /etc/init.d with a hardcopy. That can help, but maybe not during a reboot:
rm /etc/init.d/piratebox
cp /mnt/ext/etc/init.d/piratebox /etc/init.d

Maybe other issues will apear.

About bricking with flashing left to right, top to bottom. There is always a risk of choosing the wrong file on those devices, same for flashing back to original firmware- which has some more difficutlties.

My first suggestion is to use the MR3240 image, because technical it is the same chip. I can't guarantee, that it won't cause brick and fail.. but the devices are pretty similar.
I know, that we have some driver backports for this devices in our image files.

Denis, if you bought these 10 routers for this project, you may want to solve it in any case. I can offer you, that you send me over the version 2.1 and the 2.3 ; when these arrive, I try to work out something for you.

Matthias
