first of sorry for my late response.
It looks like your firmware is damaged because you flashed the wrong file to "firmware".
It seems not completely broken because it seems uboot tries to boot regular.
You weren't completly wrong with your assumptions above. I think at the point of your first discovery of only sda insteas of sda1 you should had do more investigations instead of reflashing back to TPLink, which caused you current situations.
Yes, the auto install doesn't start, because the usb stick is formatted without a partition directly. That should be corrected. Well, anyway.
I think you might be able to get to uboot via serial console and try to use tftp for reflashing your device.
