USB3 may not be supported, but USB3 drives are backwards compatible and offer improvements that make USB2 somewhat faster.

Going to google.com in my browser takes me to piratebox home page!

So on the computer that I used to set up my piratebox, it seems to have taken over my browser as now whenever i attempt to go to google.com or bing.com , i am instead taken to the piratebox splash...

Did you use wired ethernet and a static IP on you client computer? Without that access won't work.

Instead of flashing around, it would be more useful to find the mistake... like posting a detailed directory listing of your usb folder to see if there are permissions set wrongly or something else...
