Keep trying to get into failsafe mode, your box is fine, only the password is lost. Remember to connect via wire AND setup a static IP address to your ethernet port. Without that, it won't work

Thanks for the correction :) I had modified my install to include a swap space and I did a pivot root so it was all installed on the usb, in anticipation of my future tinkering.

The error messages are ok, just do mount_root passwd sync reboot -f then reboot and you should be able to login via ssh username root and your chosen password. you might also try this reflash with usb...
